For all you folks who listen to today's "modern" country music but are unfamiliar with the country music of the 1960's and 1970's, boy would you be surprised.

Most of today's music would have been labeled in that era as "easy listening rock"...a la The Eagles.

That's not necessarily bad, just mislabeled music.

The records I made with Freddy Hart, Johnny Paycheck, Warner Mack, Ronnie Milsap, and thousands of others during the Renaissance, are full flowering, which country was during those years, sounding authentic, emotional and honest, rather than today's artificial and sterile sound.

Very few singers today dare to musically venture back to that wonderful arena of sound, my friend Junior Brown being one of those rarities. However, a new singer by the name of Red Kilby had emerged. Red was influenced by a number of the singers I played steel guitar for on records, Charley Pride, Gene Watson and Mel Street, plus one of the greatest of all whom I never had the opportunity to record with, Merle Haggard.

When you listen to Red's new Album "In High Gear" you'll perhaps realize as I do that although he cut this in 1998 his heart and music are 1968.

I like that and hope you will too.
